Growing up in Mumbai (India), I did not have luxury of space and parks. When I came to America, I was delighted to see open fields, parks and gardens. Throughout America, everybody knows of the big parks, but I think we tend to forget about the thousands of little parks found in virtually every city. The local park system is fairly unique to America. Europe has plazas and squares, India has informal fields that act as parks, but your hometown will definitely have at least one park and probably many more. My painting tries to capture one such park in Saint Charles, Illinois where I currently live, but it can easily be a park in Saint Charles, Missouri, Youngstown, Ohio, or any other American city – big or small. I think it is important to think of how much time in our lives we have spent in these small parks and how much fun we had in them. Parks hold such joyous memories for all of us. The Grand Canyon and Lake Mead are wonderful places, but chances are they can’t be visited every day, but the park down the street can. Enjoy the open space, feel the fun and excitement it provides; play, reflect, and remember those moments. The park is there and will be there from childhood to old age and beyond; pass it on!
